KNOW YOUR COUNTRY

Connecting Youth. Understanding Communities. Strengthening Our Roots.

“Know Your Country” is a youth-focused initiative of Sambad Foundation, implemented in collaboration with Swasaksham Foundation, with the objective of connecting young people with the diverse communities, cultures, traditions, and lived experiences of Nepal.

Nepal is characterized by significant geographical, cultural, linguistic, and social diversity. While young people are increasingly connected through digital platforms and modern forms of communication, opportunities for direct engagement with communities and grassroots experiences remain important for developing a deeper understanding of the country.

The Know Your Country initiative seeks to bridge this gap by providing young people with opportunities to explore Nepal beyond conventional perspectives, learn directly from local communities, discover cultural heritage, and understand the social realities and diversity that shape the country.

Through youth participation and community-based learning, the initiative aims to strengthen young people’s connection with their country and encourage them to appreciate Nepal’s diversity while developing a stronger sense of civic and social responsibility.

Rationale

The diversity of Nepal represents one of the country’s significant social and cultural characteristics. Different communities across the country have their own languages, traditions, cultural practices, histories, livelihoods, and social experiences.

However, young people may have limited opportunities to directly experience this diversity outside their own communities. The Know Your Country initiative was therefore designed to encourage youth to travel beyond familiar environments and learn from communities through direct interaction and observation.

The program recognizes that meaningful learning can take place not only through formal education but also through interaction with local people, exposure to cultural heritage, and understanding community-level realities.

Objectives

The major objectives of the Know Your Country initiative are to:

  • Connect young people with diverse communities across Nepal.
  • Provide youth with opportunities to learn from local experiences and community knowledge.
  • Promote understanding and appreciation of Nepal’s cultural and social diversity.
  • Encourage young people to discover and engage with local cultural heritage.
  • Develop a deeper grassroots understanding of different communities and regions.
  • Strengthen young people’s connection with their country and its diverse identities.
  • Encourage youth participation in community-based learning and social interaction.
  • Promote mutual understanding and respect among young people from different backgrounds.
Program Approach

The initiative adopts a youth-centered and experiential learning approach. Rather than limiting learning to classroom-based discussions, participants are encouraged to engage directly with communities and explore local realities.

The program emphasizes:

Community Interaction

Youth participants are encouraged to interact with local communities and learn about their experiences, traditions, challenges, and aspirations.

Cultural Exploration

Participants have the opportunity to discover cultural heritage, local traditions, customs, and community practices that contribute to Nepal’s diverse identity.

Grassroots Learning

The initiative places importance on understanding communities from the grassroots level and learning directly from local experiences.

Youth Exchange

Bringing young people from different districts together creates opportunities for participants to exchange perspectives and develop greater understanding of different parts of Nepal.

Selection of Youth Participants

As part of the initiative, selected youth participants were announced from different districts. The selection represents an effort to involve young people from diverse geographical and community backgrounds.

The selected participants were:

  1. Tripti Yadav – Dhanusha District
  2. Suman Kumar Sharma – Mahottari District
  3. Rupesh Yadav – Sarlahi District
  4. Pradip Mahato – Dhanusha District

Their participation provides an opportunity to strengthen youth engagement across the participating districts and contribute to the broader objective of connecting young people with communities and experiences beyond their immediate surroundings.

  • Encouragement for young people to become more engaged with their communities.
Significance for Youth

Young people represent an important part of Nepal’s present and future. Their understanding of the country’s diversity can contribute to greater social cohesion and constructive community engagement.

The Know Your Country initiative creates space for youth to move beyond passive observation and become active learners. By experiencing different communities and engaging with local people, participants can develop perspectives based on direct experiences rather than assumptions.

Such exposure can also encourage young people to document, share, and preserve stories, traditions, and community knowledge that contribute to Nepal’s broader cultural identity.

Role of the Organizing and Collaborating Organizations

Sambad Foundation leads the initiative with a focus on youth engagement, dialogue, community connection, and social awareness.

The initiative is implemented in collaboration with Swasaksham Foundation, bringing together organizational efforts to create opportunities for youth participation and experiential learning.

The collaboration supports the broader objective of creating meaningful platforms through which young people can connect with communities and develop a deeper understanding of Nepal.

Broader Impact

The initiative has the potential to contribute to stronger connections between youth and communities by encouraging direct interaction and shared learning.

When young people from different districts experience one another’s communities, they can gain a more comprehensive understanding of the similarities and differences that exist across Nepal. This can contribute to greater mutual respect, cultural appreciation, and social connectedness.

The initiative can also create opportunities for youth to become ambassadors of community stories and cultural heritage by sharing their experiences with wider audiences.

Conclusion

Know Your Country is a youth-centered initiative designed to bring young people closer to the diverse communities of Nepal. By combining youth participation, community interaction, cultural exploration, and grassroots learning, the program seeks to develop a deeper understanding of the country among young people.

The selection of youth participants from Dhanusha, Mahottari, and Sarlahi represents an important step toward creating cross-community youth engagement and shared learning experiences.

Through continued implementation and expansion, the initiative can provide young people with meaningful opportunities to connect with communities, understand Nepal’s diversity, discover cultural heritage, and strengthen their roots with the country they call home.
